About 3 years ago my wife decided she wanted a bike.

Which meant I got to get a bike too.

I got into the last MSF class of the year on standby on a weekend she had to work and got my license. She got a learner's permit.

She got a new 250cc Honda Reflex (scooter) and I got an 82 Honda cm450c to learn/practice on. We rode around on back roads and parking lots but she dropped her bike a couple of times and now has a confidence problem. She wants to get a 50cc scooter to practice on and rebuild her confidence. I think this would be a good idea, just want other experienced riders opinions.

BTW, she tried to take the MSF course but could not complete it because she couldn't ride their bikes. Could not even tippy toe them. Plus arthritis makes it so she has to have a step through like a scooter. She also always wears helmet, jacket, gloves & boots.

My wife has never "crashed", but has dropped her bikes more times than I can count, kind of like the old Laugh In skit with Artie Johnson on the tricycle. When she feels it is to late she just steps off, and lets it go. So far it has worked for her, just a few $$ for broken mirrors and levers.

Just reassure her it is normal, just like falling when learning to skate of ski.

it wouldn't be a bad idea, if she feels like she would be confident on the 50cc, go for it. i don't know about other states but in PA you can take the msf on a scooter. you just have to pre-register it so the instructors know. might be the same out there.

Thanks. I just checked their website and it says to contact them if you have a disability to discuss making reasonable accommodations, so I'll check into that.
