Found: hand guards for wind protection

I would like to get some hand guards to (retro)fit onto my M750S. Does anyone know how they attach? I have a 7/8" handlebar so if they attach there, it might be pretty easy to install one.

When I looked at ebay, all I found were a bunch of ATV hand guards (not sure if they would work) and a V-strom set for $50+ buy it now. What other bikes use hand guards?

I'd prefer cheap and I dont care what color they are. I can always paint them.

I'd venture a guess that ATV protectors would work, most are simple clamps on the bar with a support bar holding the plastic out or some are stiff molded plastic that are basically zip tied around the handlebar.

You could try looking at the BMW GS's and the some of the motards and dual sports but those will probably be expensive.

Acerbis sells decent ones. Check them out. I think it is www.Acerbis.com

Posted by: mangeldbug

I did a search on the DML and came up with a few ideas based on what other Monster owners have done. The Multistrada ones look nice but are freaking expensive, V-strom ones work with a little modification, and Buell City X ones work as well.

That Acerbis site has some nice ones. I couldnt find anything about price though.

As far as road bikes, all the "adventure tourer" bikes come with available handguards, the two KTM's, the Beamer RGS's, the 2 v stroms, the Triumph Tigers, the Multistrada etc etc. But, your best bet is probably to get them from a dirtbike aftermarket company.

Yeah universal dirtbike ones would be cheapest. Years ago I found a set at a dealer on their clearance rack for 10 bucks. I had them on my XT250. Bolted on in 5 minutes.

The universal jobs are cheapest and probably the easiest to put on. I've been considering the Buell Handguards, as they look a little better, and I like the way they mount. If you need the Buell part numbers let me know, I think you'll have about $60 in all the stuff you need from Buell.

Posted by: mangeldbug

87, from what Ive found, the Buell Lightning CityX (XB9SX) hand guards bolt right on. All you need is the hand guards, no mounting kit required. A guy on the DML has them on his Monster and he said you can get them for $30 brand new from Buell...I dont know if this is for each or for the set. I PM'd him since he used to have pics up of his bike with the guards, but an admin deleted them to clear up space.

Dave, if you could get me the part numbers for just the CityX hand guards, I can call Gatto's to find out pricing.

Heres the Buell Part Numbers

From the Buell CityX.

I'm not sure, but you might not need the handlebar plugs if you have stock bar ends. After doing some research, I have read that the V-Strom hand guards offer better protection, but require a little more work to get them mounted. I'm going to check them out on Ron Ayers.

Yes, this is what I have read as well.
Too bad I didnt know more when I first posted this thread. There was a rashed up pair of CityX guards on ebay with the pins that would go through my levers - they ended up going for $15 but I didnt bid because I wasnt sure they would work

Do a search for Appleton Buell, call and ask for a guy in Sales (yes, sales) named Dave Stevie.

Tell him you found him from the Adv board and he will give you a 10% discount.

wow, awesome! sounds like a good deal thanks rob

I found a girl on the DML who used to have a set of CityX guards but decided she didnt need them. She said I could have them for the cost of shipping. Sounds good to me!

BINGO!

Posted by: 87hurricane

Oh you suck! I think you should probably give them to me since I told you what you needed....

I use a set of these when it gets really cold:

Combined with heated grips, your hands will never get cold. They look difficult to get your hands into, but that's only true when you're on the move. Ride with both hands on the bars and there's no issue at all. The best part is they're only ~$10 for the pair.

I trust Mark, he has made some long cold rides on non touring bikes in the time since I have known him. Doesn't stop me from wanting to do this only if they come in red so i be a lobster at halloween as well.

There are less LARGE ones available for motorcycles.
www.hippohands.com

Might be more than $10 though.

They aren't nearly as large as they look in that pic. I don't know if they've made changes since that pic was taken, but mine are sized much more like the pics on the hippohands page.

Installed on my VFR, they come up to ~5 inches from my elbow.

Hey Kristen, let me know how those guards work for you. I think I'm going to pick up a set of DR or KLR guards off ebay and see what happens. I went over to the Kawi shop and did some measuring, I'm pretty sure I can make the KLR guards work.

Posted by: mangeldbug

Ill let you know. I told the girl on the DML who said I could have hers that I definately wanted them and to get back to me with a shipping price. Havent heard anything yet.

Posted by: mangeldbug

She shipped them out today!! Cost: $9
Ill post pictures once I have them installed

Posted by: natrona848

SWEET!

You do know that now this means no exuses for not riding in early Nov.

Posted by: mangeldbug

Got them in the mail on Friday and installed them last night and rode to work today! (it snowed on the way home, high of 42)

When we put them on, I wasnt too sure how great they would be at wind protection. They seemed kind of small and the top of the hand guard was about equal to the grip.

But they worked great! On the way to school, I forgot to flip on my heated vest, but my fingers only got cold at the very end of the 15 mile trip. Usually my fingers are frozen at least 5 miles into the trip. And I think this is the coldest its been when Ive ridden in. On the way home, I turned on my heated vest and my fingers never froze. I was actually pretty comfortable!

I got some "you must be nuts" looks from other motorists though since it was flurrying.

Posted by: natrona848

nice job! glad it helps you out a bit.

Posted by: Falcn

Needs different bar ends that blend better with the handguard at the interface - but if this isn't a permanent installation I wouldn't worry about it.

Posted by: Diesel

Very nice.

I have yet to put the V-Strom guards I got over a year
ago on the FJR.....

Posted by: Rob Hephner

Hehe, looks like my bike stock!

Nice Job.

Heck, that's the best part of winter riding! Congrats on joining the ranks of the "real" bikers (all those riders that put their bikes in storage for the winter, and then complain that we look down our noses at their inferiority are really just jealous ) Nice job on the 'guards too.

ATV Mitts

Just ordered a pair.

Tried one of them out on the way to work last week - it certainly works well to block the wind, but forget about taking your hands out and putting them back in at a stoplight or to adjust anything on your helmet or jacket. My left hand (the one in the mitt) was very hot with the heated grips on medium. My right hand was cold because of the windblast.

I want to cut down the arm length until it just covers my wrists - and put a plastic ring on the wrist opening to keep it open when my arms are not inside. I also want to make a way for the end to connect to the bar end to keep it from moving fwd when I put my hands in them - then they would be much better for street riding.

bman on ADvrider posted these - more like what I was thinking of doing to the ATV mitts

I just installed a set of V-Strom Handguards on my bike. (Thanks Diesel!) They took a very minimal amount of work to fit them up, and they make a HUGE difference. They actually don't look too bad on the bike either, I'll get some pics sometime this weekend.

Posted by: mangeldbug

Craig rode his V-Strom over to our house today and I compared my CityX guards to his stock guards. (I should have taken a picture, but didnt think of it at the time)

Ill use this pic of the CityX guards on my bike as a reference:

How the Buell and V-Strom guards mount is very similar. Ive read it takes a little bit of modification to make the Strom guards fit, but its nothing drastic - I think maybe shaving a corner of the plastic or something. The bottom half of the guards are also very similar, almost identical. The top half of the guards is where the Strom guards really kick the CityX's ass though. The Strom's guard were literally double the hand protection. They came higher and further back whereas the top of the CityX guards is almost level with the grip.
The CityX guards do offer some wind/cold protection, and they work great when it is rainy, but when compared to the Strom guards their only plus is the cost.

thinking about a swap?
